What is the nature of the material world? And how are its fundamental constituents to be described? These questions are of central concern to contemporary philosophers, and in their attempt to answer them, they have begun reconsidering traditional views about metaphysical structure, including the Aristotelian view that material objects are best described as 'hylomorphic compounds'--that is, objects composed of both matter (hyle) and form (morphe).
In this major new study, Jeffrey E. Brower presents and explains the hylomorphic conception of the material world developed by Thomas Aquinas, the most influential Aristotelian of the Middle Ages. According to Brower, the key to understanding Aquinas's conception lies in his distinctive account of intrinsic change. Beginning with a novel analysis of this account, Brower systematically introduces all the elements of Aquinas's hylomorphism, showing how they apply to material objects in general and human beings in particular. The resulting picture not only sheds new light on Aquinas's ontology as a whole, but provides a wholesale alternative to the standard contemporary accounts of material objects.

In addition to presenting and explaining Aquinas's views, Brower seeks wherever possible to bring them into dialogue with the best recent literature on related topics. Along the way, he highlights the contribution that Aquinas's views make to a host of contemporary metaphysical debates, including the nature of change, composition, material constitution, the ontology of stuff vs. things, the proper analysis of ordinary objects, the truthmakers for essential vs. accidental predication, and the metaphysics of property possession.

Satoko Shimazaki revisits three centuries of kabuki theater, reframing it as a key player in the formation of an early modern urban identity in Edo Japan and exploring the process that resulted in its re-creation in Tokyo as a national theatrical tradition. Challenging the prevailing understanding of early modern kabuki as a subversive entertainment and a threat to shogunal authority, Shimazaki argues that kabuki instilled a sense of shared history in the inhabitants of Edo (present-day Tokyo) by invoking "worlds," or sekai, derived from earlier military tales, and overlaying them onto the present. She then analyzes the profound changes that took place in Edo kabuki toward the end of the early modern period, which witnessed the rise of a new type of character: the vengeful female ghost.

Shimazaki's bold reinterpretation of the history of kabuki centers on the popular ghost play Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan (The Eastern Seaboard Highway Ghost Stories at Yotsuya, 1825) by Tsuruya Nanboku IV. Drawing not only on kabuki scripts but also on a wide range of other sources, from theatrical ephemera and popular fiction to medical and religious texts, she sheds light on the development of the ubiquitous trope of the vengeful female ghost and its illumination of new themes at a time when the samurai world was losing its relevance. She explores in detail the process by which nineteenth-century playwrights began dismantling the Edo tradition of "presenting the past" by abandoning their long-standing reliance on the sekai. She then reveals how, in the 1920s, a new generation of kabuki playwrights, critics, and scholars reinvented the form again, "textualizing" kabuki so that it could be pressed into service as a guarantor of national identity.

This book is written to give the reader a perspective into the challenging times that immediately followed the terror attacks of 9/11, from an American Muslim perspective. As challenges arose, it was important to address the misinformation that seemed to be growing in the vacuum that was created in the absence of our input. I was the founding President of an organization, the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut - MCCT, that grew out of the ashes of the tragedy of 9/11, that was aimed at countering the fear through education. We were determined to live our faith through service projects that reflected our values, and we invited our neighbors from other faith communities to join us in these efforts. Together with them, we served in soup kitchens and shelters, built habitat houses, walked against hunger and participated in the National Day of service, by collecting towels for the homeless. Through MCCT, we also formed a speaker’s bureau to proactively define who we are, in the face of the increasing fear of us. We reached out to places of worship and other institution and organizations, offering our resources in education. This has become a popular service, with our speakers being invited to various places of worship, including synagogues and churches, local hospitals and various branches of government, including to the judiciary as well as to the law enforcement community. Our efforts were rewarded by the Supreme Court in the state of Connecticut, that gave the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut the Law Day Award for 2013, in recognition of our outreach and education. It was the culmination of years of hard work at outreach. As we reached out, we were encountering a loud voice feeding on the ignorance of our neighbors of us. They caused a vicious cycle of ignorance, leading to fear and eventually hate, from some very insecure people whose voices were magnified as they were interviewed by some talk radio show hosts and others in media. Into this mix, came some opportunistic politicians, who all combined to make this a very challenging time for us. Our youth were particularly being affected by this rhetoric and, while we did everything to try to impart to them a positive American Muslim identity, there was a louder voice, which was amplified by social media, that made them feel isolated and alienated. There was now in the picture a group that fed on this fear and division by welcoming them to a false utopia in the Middle East, ISIS. We had to work even harder at making our youth feel secure. It is into this environment that this book invites us to look to our role models in faith – from Moses to Jesus to Muhammad – God’s peace be upon them all, and assess what our role should be in this time. It is to a very insecure world that these role models came, and created legendary change by incorporating wisdom and love. It is not easy to practice "love thy neighbor", even if that is a refugee from a far away land, but that is our religious calling, which is no different to our national calling, which is still emblazoned on the statue of liberty. Our nation was founded by very wise people and, as Muslims, we have faith that our Constitution will ultimately protect us from xenophobes carrying out their hate. Our nation was founded to prevent the religious extremism. This book is aimed, not just at educating, but at living life with the wisdom of education. I invite you to join me in our quest to make our nation a little more welcoming, a little more loving and a little more whole. The soul unmanifest in its essential being, manifest through the nature of its personality equipment, is always a source of mystery. It evades the analytical concrete mind: it reveals its true self to the illumined mind fused with the open heart, seeking not to grasp and to hold for personal progress, but to wield the magical power in service. The power of the soul is always available to the one who seeks, as an aspirant to accepted discipleship, to become of practical service in his own peculiar times, state and environment.

The teaching in this book is based on four fundamental postulates which will:

1. Teach the laws of spiritual psychology as distinguished from mental and emotional psychology.

2. Make clear the nature of the soul of man and its systemic and cosmic relationships. This will include its group relationship as a preliminary step.

3. Demonstrate the relations between the self and the sheaths which that self may use, and thus clarify thought as to the constitution of man.

4. Elucidate the problem of supernormal powers and give the rules for their safe and useful development.

Through these underlying postulates runs the theme of energy, of the one informing life as a centre of energy, pervading and uniting all within the divine flow. Man is essentially and inherently divine; and the soul, the centre of consciousness, the result of the pervasive union of Spirit with matter, is the means whereby man evolves a consciousness of divinity and unity, redeems the gross matter of his vehicles and liberates the pure flame of life energy from the limitation of form. The soul is the vital link, therefore, between God and man.

The book closes with a rousing call to the soul in all aspirants: "I close with an appeal to all who read these instructions, to rally their forces, to renew their vows of dedication to the service of humanity, to subordinate their own ideas and wishes to the group good, to take their eyes off themselves and fix them anew upon the vision, . . . Let all students make up their minds in this day of emergency and of opportunity to sacrifice all they have to the helping of humanity. . . . I call upon all of you to join the strenuous efforts of the Great Ones."
